Mahogany
Constructed Wetland

This southeast neighbourhood is an outdoor lover’s paradise with numerous parks, natural spaces and the largest man-made lake in Calgary. As the landscape architect for Hopewell’s flagship development, Bassett Associates is pleased to play a pivotal role in establishing Mahogany as the CHBA-Calgary Chapter Community of the Year.

Mahogany’s 75 acre constructed wetland exemplifies nature and engineering in harmony. Bare land was completely recontoured and populated with native trees, shrubs, grasses, seating areas and pathways. The result is an extensive natural environment that serves two unique yet equally vital purposes. Ecologically, the wetlands serve as both a retention and filtering system for the community’s storm water deposits, and as critical habitat for a number of wildlife species. Aesthetically, the area provides residents and guests with myriad recreation opportunities including walking, jogging, cycling and nature viewing. Pathway loops and bridge crossings allow residents to travel conveniently through the community year round.
